The Weakley Family Materials collection houses the correspondence and personal memorabilia of the Weakley family. This collection, which dates from 1918 to 1948, consists of letters, a photograph, a funeral record, and a newspaper page.

Biographical / Historical

Willie Weakley was born on July 10, 1896, in Southside, Montgomery County, Tennessee to Thomas and Ellen Weakley. The third of six children, he worked on his father’s farm until he was drafted into the Army during WWI on September 21, 1917. Willie was assigned to A Battery, 115th Field Artillery, 30th Infantry Division and sent to France in June 1918. While in France, he wrote letters to his mother asking about home, his family, and the farm. After the war, Willie married Gertie Viola Weakley (née Pursell). They had no children and lived in Nashville where Willie worked as a locksmith and Gertie as a bookkeeper. Gertie died in August 1987, survived by Willie who died at the age of 95 on September 25, 1990.
