Biographical / Historical

In 2018, Lionel Senseney donated this collection to the Montgomery County Archives. This collection includes meeting minutes and records for the United Charities of Clarksville, a local charitable organization.

On December 19, 1910, the United Charities of Clarksville, Tennessee was established by local representatives from churches and city organizations engaged in relief work. These agencies cooperated to solicit funds, interview needy applicants, and distribute aid as needed. The United Charities of Clarksville served as the primary relief agency in Montgomery County from 1910 to 1939. Funds from the United Charities provided emergency, one-time aid to be used in conjunction with other types of assistance.

This collection provides detailed notes on charitable work and meeting proceedings. Local residents active in the community served on the United Charities Board. In the 1977 - 1983 minute book, Lionel Senseney is listed as the secretary of the United Charities Board and County Director of the Department of Human Services.

The financial statements, 1979-1981, were loose papers found inside the 1977-1984 minute book. The papers were removed, foldered, and placed in Box 1.
