Scope and Contents

The Dottie Williams McCauley Collection houses assorted publications dating from 1917-1977. The largest portion of the collection includes Farmers' and Public Health Bulletins, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Public Health Service, and University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service. These publications date from 1917 to 1933 with a range of subjects, such as food preperation and storage, housework, and animal husbandry. An assortment of newspaper clippings from the Nashville Banner, The Leaf Chronicle, and The Tennessean highlight local happenings in the Middle Tennessee area. These newspapers span from January 28, 1931 to March 31, 1975. The bulk of the clippings appeared from November 26, 1952 to January 28, 1954 in The Leaf Chronicle of Clarksville. The final component of the collection features a small number of periodicals dating from 1933 to 1977.

Biographical / Historical

Dottie Williams was born in 1917 to Joseph and Lula Williams of Dickson County, Tennessee. As a young woman she worked as a seamstress in a wholesale shirt factory. In 1937 she married Lea A. McCauley, Jr., who went on to become civil service employee at Fort Campbell and World War II veteran. About 1946 their daughter, Rebecca Lee McCauley was born and in the 1950 census Dottie is listed as a homemaker. Lea died in 1989 after a long illness. Dottie survived her husband by ten years and died on January 29, 1999.

Abstract

The Dottie Williams McCauley Collection was donated by her daughter, Becky Jarrell, in 2000. This collection contains 33 items, consisting of documents related to home economics, agriculture, and local events in Middle Tennessee. It includes pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and magazines.

Arrangement

Arranged in three series by material type: I. Pamphlets, 1914-1933. II. Newspapers and clippings, 1931-1975. III. Periodicals, 1933-1977.

Processing Information

In the absence of an observable order, the archivist arranged the collection into three series based on material type and date during processing. Materials were placed in acid-free folders and archival boxes.
