Biographical / Historical
During World War II the United States Office of Price Administration issued ration books to each American in order to regulate the supply of items during certain shortages. Although the nation was prepared for needed war materials, such as gas and rubber, to experience shortages, as the war went on other necessities became difficult for citizens to purchase. The government issued the ration books in various waves that indicated when they could be used and what items they were needed for. In order to purchase rationed items, the consumer needed to present their ration ticket from their ration book when they paid for the items. By 1947 the rations ended and the books were no longer needed.
