Biographical / Historical

Wilma Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940 in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was the seventeenth out of nineteen children, and she often credited her siblings for her athletic abilities. When Rudolph was four years old she was diagnosed with polio and became paralyzed from the waist down. After three years of practice with her mother, Rudolph was able to walk again. Originally, Rudolph started playing basketball, but she eventually dedicated herself to track. In 1956 Rudolph won a bronze medal at the Melbourne Olympics, and four years later she won three gold medals at the 1960 Olympic Games. Rudolph later competed in and won several competitions across the world making her one of the most famous American athletes of her time. Upon returning home she stayed active in teaching and coaching the next generation of athletes. Rudolph passed away on November 12, 1994 in Brentwood, Tennessee.
