Scope and Contents

The Bennett-Marklin Family Collection houses the personal papers of V.L. Bennet and his wife Ailean Marklin Bennet. This collection, which dates from circa 1939-1960, consists of financial papers, insurance policies, receipts, greeting cards, a family bible, and a small number of photographs, primarily documenting the finances of V.L. and Ailean Bennett. The collection also includes a small notepad used at the Marklin family grocery store and an oversized dictionary.

Biographical / Historical

V.L. Bennett and Bertha Ailean Marklin were married in Elkton, Kentucky on January 9, 1935. They settled in Clarksville, Tennessee after they were married eventually both took jobs at the Acme Boot Company. While it is unclear how long Ailean work at Acme, V.L. Bennett went on to work at the plant for 40 years. Their only child, Shirley Ann Bennett, was born in 1938. V.L. Bennett died in 1980 after a long illness and Ailean died in 2000. Both are buried in Sango Cemetery.

Processing Information

Materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes. The collection was arranged based on subject due to the absence of any original order. Photographs were placed in acid-free sleeves and removed to the archives photograph collection.
