The W.B. Vaughan Papers houses financial and legal records of William Burton Vaughan of Indian Mound, Tennessee. This collection, which dates from circa 1907-1927, consists of insurance policies, cancelled checks, receipts, bank statements, and assorted advertisements.

Biographical / Historical

Born in 1867 in Stewart County, William Burton (W.B.) Vaughan was a lifelong resident of Indian Mound, Tennessee. In 1887 he married Mary Leona Smith, and the couple went on to have a total of ten children together. Vaughan was a carpenter, and passed the trade onto his children. Four of his sons also made careers as carpenters, including William Dewey Vaughn (1899-1955) and Thomas Earl Vaughan (1904-1967), both of whom are represented in this collection. His son John Ollie Vaughan worked as a salesmen for the McNeal and Edwards department store in Clarksville before briefly owning and operating a grocery store in New Providence. W.B. Vaughan died suddenly in 1943 of a stroke at the age of 75 and his wife Mary died in 1950 at the age of 79.

Processing Information

Materials were lightly cleaned and torn materials placed in mylar folders. Due to the lack of usable order, the materials were arranged based on subject and placed in acid-free folders and boxes. A newspaper clipping of a trivia quiz with no notations was weeded from the collection.
