Biographical / Historical
The Black Jack Hunting and Fishing Club was an organization for the men of Montgomery County that allowed for fellowship while engaging in outdoor activities. They had a lodge at Reelfoot Lake and would make annual excursions to the area during the hunting and fishing seasons.
Reelfoot Lake has a rich history in its own right. Created between 1811 and 1812 due to a series of earthquakes, Reelfoot is home to a rich ecosystem including bald eagles, bluegills, and Cypress trees. It has roots in First Nations' legends as well who believe the lake was formed in response to a disrespectful chief who incurred the wrath of the Great Spirit.
The photographs contained within this collection pertain to Black Jack members and activities in the 1960's, however, it is believed the club was established in the early 1900's. The Black Jack Club regularly participated in excursions with another local hunting club, the Blue Wing Hunting Club, as well. Today, branches of the Black Jack Club still exist around Reelfoot Lake. They act as guides for visitors from around the country who come to hunt and fish at the lake.
