Biographical / Historical
In 1999 the County Commission voted to create a 17-member Montgomery County Millennium Commission to plan a yearlong celebration ushering in the new millennium. The commission consisted of several different committees, including the Millennium Commission Historic Picture Committee. The committee was tasked with collecting historic photographs of Montgomery County to hang in the renovated Courthouse and the newly built Montgomery County Courts Center at Millennium Plaza. Brenda Radford served as the chair of the committee and oversaw the collection of historic photographs. Other committee members included Eleanor Williams, Margaret Fleming, and Ned Crouch.
Over the period of several days the public was invited to bring in historic photographs for scanning. Other organizations including the Leaf-Chronicle, Austin Peay State University, the Customs House Museum, Clarksville-Montgomery County Library, Montgomery County Archives, and the Don F. Pratt Museum from Fort Campbell, Kentucky also contributed photographs to the collection. Goodlettsville photographer Douglas Richardson was hired to scan the photographs, make negatives and photograph proof pages, and make enlarged prints for display.
The committee scanned nearly 500 photographs and chose a total of 151 for display in the Montgomery County Courts Complex. They also produced a brochure titled Rembering the Past to accompany the display that included historical notes on each photograph. In 2003 some of the images appeared again in a new booklet titled Montgomery County Courts in Session: Official Dedication, January 22, 2003.
