Biographical / Historical

In 2006, Christopher D. Ammons donated this collection to the Montgomery County Archives. This collection includes 3 photographs, a photocopied newspaper article and biographical notes concerning Colonel Ben T. Ammons, Christopher Ammons father. Col. Ammons joined the National Guard in 1928 and served in World War II. He retired from the Army in 1961. Following in his father’s footsteps, Christopher D. Ammons enlisted in the Army in 1967. He served two tours in Vietnam where he documented his experiences in letters and photographs which are housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. This collection also includes 26 letters written by Thomas W. Page, Jr. to Christopher Ammons and family during the Gulf War while he was deployed to Saudi Arabia. He had previously completed a tour of duty with the Army in Vietnam, serving in the 299th Engineer Battalion, 15th Engineer Company. Page deployed to Saudi Arabia in December, 1990 and remained there for several months. Of particular note in this collection is his description of the lengthy process of reaching Saudi Arabia from the United States. In his letters Page also inquires several times about reported layoffs at both the Trane Company and Vulcan Corporation, two manufacturing and materials employers in Clarksville at the time. Christopher Ammons also donated two photographs of Thomas W. Page, taken while on active duty in 1990.
