Biographical / Historical

In January 1999 a tornado tore through downtown Clarksville, destroying or severely damaging several buildings. The historic Montgomery County Courthouse was one of the buildings that was damaged. At the time of the tornado, considerations for expansion of the courts complex was already underway and with the severity of the damage complete demolition of the building was under consideration. Residents successfully mounted a campaign to restore the building however, with a newer building to be installed right next to the historic courthouse. Four years after the tornado, the restoration and new construction were both complete, and on January 22, 2003 the new Montgomery County Courts Center was officially opened. The photographs in this collection capture the ribbon-cutting for the new center and other architectural features.
