Journals and Diaries of the Fort Family, 1858 to 1935
Scope and Contents
The “Diaries and Journals” series encompasses the ‘Day Books’ and journals that Sterling Fort, Josiah Fort, and Robert Fleming used to annotate their everyday lives. These journals are mostly recordings of the weather on any particular day, and whether or not they met with somebody that day. The diaries do not reflect any sort of emotional internal dialogue that was written down, but instead document details pertinent to the farming businesses managed by the Forts and Flemings such as wind factors, heavy rains, dry seasons, and cold weather. An item of particular interest within this series is Sterling Fort's last Day Book, in which multiple scribbles and small drawings by Joseph Baxter Trahern can be seen.
